- MEMORY VERSE
-
-
- "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might
- not sin against Thee." (Psalm 119:11)
-
-
- INTRODUCTION
-
- "Memory Verse" was written for the purpose of
- helping the user memorize portions of the Holy Bible. In
- this program the user has over 300 key Bible verses
- available to them for memorization. The user can also add
- their own favorite Bible verses easily.
-
-
- REQUIREMENTS
-
- "Memory Verse" was written to run on the IBM PC and
- true compatible computer. At least 256K memory is
- required. The program will work well on monochrome and
- color monitors. It will run on a floppy or hard disk
- drive, however the hard disk is preferred simply because it
- will improve the program's performance during disk access.
- You can use the utility INSTALLC.BAT to install the program
- to your hard disk if you wish to install "Memory Verse" to
- your hard disk. The only other requirement is that at
- least 90K bytes of free disk space remain on whatever disk
- you are using. This 90K of disk space is used as a
- temporary buffer when you add new verses to the already
- large database of verses. If you have ONLY the "Memory
- Verse" related files on a 360K floppy, you will have plenty
- of room to spare, and this requirement should not be of
- much concern.
-
-
- DIRECTIONS
-
- To begin "Memory Verse" insert the diskette into
- a floppy drive. At the DOS prompt type: MVERSE then press
- <ENTER> or double click MVERSE.EXE from Windows' File
- Manager. After "Memory Verse" has been loaded, and the
- title screen clears, a Main Menu/Index will appear on the
- screen.
-
- From the Main Menu the user can select specific
- books of the Bible from which they wish to find a verse to
- memorize. Pressing <ESC> at this Main Menu will return the
- user to DOS. Once having selected a specific book(s), the
- user will be presented with another menu. This second
- menu allows the user to select the specific verse(s) they
- wish to memorize. If the number of selections fills the
-
- screen then use the <PG DN> key. This might reveal even
- more verse selections in the menu list. Once a selected
- verse appears on the screen the user has four options:
-
- 1) They may choose to return to the Main Menu by
- pressing <ESC> key
-
- 2) They may choose to print a copy of the selected
- verse to a printer by pressing the <ALT> and <P>
- keys together
-
- 3) They may choose to test their memory of that
- verse by selecting <L> Letter by Letter
- restoration. This will require that the user
- restore their selected verse letter by letter.
-
- 4) They may choose to test their memory of that
- verser by selecting <W> Word by Word restoration.
- This selection will require that the user restore
- their verse word by word from a list.
-
-
- USING A MOUSE
-
- If you have a mouse active and connected to your
- system, you can make a menu selection by pressing the
- <LEFT> mouse button. The <RIGHT> mouse button functions
- just like the <ESC> key. However, when a "Y/N" prompt
- ("Yes" or "No") appears, clicking the <LEFT> mouse button
- is equivalent to answering "Yes", and the <RIGHT> mouse
- button equals a "No" response.
-
-
- MEMORIZING VERSES
-
- When the <L> or <W> key is pressed, (or
- corresponding mouse button) the verse that was previously
- on the screen disappears in part.
-
-
- LETTER BY LETTER
-
- If the user chose the Letter by Letter
- restoration option, what will be left remaining on the
- screen is a "skeleton" of dashes and punctuation marks.
- The user at this point must type in their selected verse
- EXACTLY as it originally appeared before it disappeared.
- This may sound hard at first, but the program will help you
- through the verse. If the program senses that you are
- stuck and cannot recall the next letter of the verse, the
-
- computer will briefly (and I mean briefly) flash a hint
- across the screen. Hopefully this will be enough to keep
- the user going. Any errors that the user may make (typos)
- will sound an alarm. If after beginning the restoration
- process the user wishes to stop before finishing the verse
- then press the <ESC> key.
-
- If the user is interested in tracking their typing
- skills, then next time begin "Memory Verse" by typing at
- the DOS prompt ---> MVERSE /T <ENTER> What the "/T"
- parameter on the command line does is display a typing
- summary box at the end of each completed verse. Errors,
- words per minute speed, and average typing speed are
- displayed in this box for reference. Tracking one's typing
- ability is not the purpose of "Memory Verse", however this
- option is available for those who might benefit from it.
-
-
- WORD BY WORD
-
- An alternative to retyping the missing verse is to
- restore the verse word by word. For those users who are
- poor at typing, this alternative will prove easier than the
- letter by letter restoration (described above). When <W>
- is pressed, the first line of the selected verse will
- disappear from the screen. At the same time, a small
- box/window will be displayed on the screen. Within this
- box are all the words to the (missing) first line of the
- selected verse in alphabetical order. The user must
- "point" and "shoot" the words to the missing verse back on
- to the screen. This is accomplished by using the cursor
- control keys (up, down arrows, page up, page down, etc.)
- or by moving the mouse. Cursor key input can be minimized
- by pressing a letter key that corresponds to the first
- letter of the word that you are looking to select. Any
- errors will sound an alarm, but the user is permitted to
- continue, nonetheless. As soon as line #1 has been
- restored, the next line will disappear (if any). This will
- continue, one by one, until the user reaches the end of the
- verse. Pressing <ESC> or the <RIGHT> mouse button anytime
- within this process will permit the user to escape the
- verse restoration.
-
-
- NO ERRORS
-
- A verse that was restored on to the screen 100%
- correctly (no alarms) will register a "heart" token. To
- repeat the preceding process, simply answer "Y" (Yes) to
- the prompt "Do you wish to try again? (Y/N)". The more the
- user attempts the above procedure, the more their selected
-
- verse will become part of their memory. Pronouncing the
- words as the user types them also helps in this process.
-
-
- SCOREBOARD
-
- To track the best performances, a top ten
- scoreboard is maintained and displayed upon exiting Memory
- Verse. The highest record will be based upon the number of
- words correctly restored. If you would rather prefer to
- have the scoreboard sorted and maintained by a user's
- correct percentage (words correctly restored divided by
- total number of words attempted) then enter the following
- command line when starting the program:
-
- MVERSE SORT=PCT then press [ENTER]
-
-
- ADDING YOUR OWN VERSES
-
- From the "VERSE INDEX" listing, the user not only
- has the option to retrieve an existing verse for
- memorization, but also has the ability to ADD new or DELETE
- existing verses. Simply press the [DEL] key to delete
- PERMANENTLY the verse which is currently highlighted. To
- insert a NEW memory verse into the current database, place
- the highlighted marker bar on an existing verse AFTER which
- you wish to insert a new verse. Since the program does not
- perform any sorting of verses, it is the user's
- responsibility to place the highlighted marker bar in its
- proper position before pressing the [INS] key. Again, the
- new verse will be placed directly behind the currently
- highlighted verse.
-
- Once you have begun adding a new verse to the
- database, an editing screen will appear in which the user
- must enter their new memory verse. It is recommended for
- the sake of consistency that the new verse be entered using
- normal case letters. Do not enter your verse in all
- uppercase, for it looks poor. By pressing the [F10] key
- the user can enter the verse book, chapter and verse, after
- which pressing the [ENTER] key will save their new verse to
- the database list.
-
-
- DIFFERENT VERSION
-
- You can change versions (King James to NIV) by
- choosing the "Options" selection from the Main Menu. The
- "Select/load a new .DTA verse file:" will allow you to
- select a different Bible translation database file.
-
-
-
- TROUBLESHOOTING
-
- We have made every effort to make Memory Verse as
- easy to use and trouble-free as possible. The only known
- problem that has occurred on some user's computers is
- related to the screen font display. If your computer locks
- up upon starting the program, try deleting the MVERSE.FNT
- file. This font file is used for screen enhancement
- purposes. It is not a necessary file, and will cause some
- older, non-standard VGA video cards problems if it exists.
- You may also force the program to start without the special
- fonts by typing: MVERSE /NOFONT at the command line when
- starting. If you still have problems, please leave us a
- note on our BBS (see below) or include a self-addressed
- stamped envelope and also a phone number with a DETAILED
- description of your system and problem. Please be
- super-specific!

- responsibility for losses incurred from the use of "Memory
- Verse". "Memory Verse" is provided on an "as is" basis
- with no guarantees whatsoever.
-
-
- SHAREWARE
-
- "Memory Verse" is distributed as shareware.
- Shareware is a "try before you buy" software marketing
- concept that allows the user to obtain fully functional
- copies of programs for evaluation. The distribution and
- copying fee that you may have paid to obtain this disk DOES
- NOT cover the cost of the software contained on this disk.
- Shareware programs such as "Memory Verse" require separate
- payment to the author if it is found to be a useful product
- and if it is used beyond a reasonable evaluation period. A
- registration form is provided for you at the end of the
- program. Remember, the program author has not received a
- single penny from the distributor of this disk. The only
- monies we receive are from you the user. If users do not
- support the program, the author goes hungry and future
- enhancements to this and other similar Bible programs are
- hindered.
-
-
- DISK DUPLICATION
-
- If you are a shareware distributor/vendor and wish
- to offer "Memory Verse" in your library, we request that
